I swear, the only thing getting me through January is awards season. It's nice to have a little glamor to look forward to on a Monday morning. After last night's SAG awards, I have to say, I was pretty impressed. It was a big night for navy (not my favorite color), but I actually did like a couple of the toned down-gowns. Of course, I always love a little color though, so was happy to see some bright pinks and reds mixed in there too! What did you think of the SAG fashion? Who made your "best dressed" list? My favorites are below!
Nina Dobrev in Elie Saab.
Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen
Anne Hathaway in Giambattista Valli
Amanda Seyfried in Zac Posen
Nicole Kidman in Vivienne Westwood
Today marks the kick off of StyleWeek Northeast. Established in 2009, the runway shows have become a twice-yearly staple in Rhode Island, and expanding. I'm proud to say I, and The Rhode Show, have been involved with StyleWeek since it's incarnation, and I'm honored to be one of the judges for "Red on the Runway". The event, which partners designers with heart disease survivors, benefits The American Heart Association. What could be more stylish than that? "Red on the Runway" is just one of many shows and events happening during this week-long celebration of fashion. More than a dozen up and coming designers will show collections, including Project Runway alum (and all around great guy) Jonathan Joseph Peters, as well as regional favorites and StyleWeek staples Sarah Prost, Jessica Abernathy, Maria Del Carmen Mercado and Kara Wickman- just to name a few! I'll even be wearing some of their designs throughout the week! I'll also be drinking mass amounts of coffee and chewing gum in an attempt to avoid eating. I kid, I kid. This season, there will be a first of its kind runway show from accessory designer Kent Stetson. Buckle your seat belts, I've heard he has some tricks up his sleeve! Tickets are still available for many of the shows, and each cocktail hour featuring an accessory showcase, where you can sip, shop, and buy, is open to the public. More info here. Let the games begin!

Loved the prints at Hope Macdonald's runway show last season.
Emma Stone is one of my current faves. She's fashion forward, funny and of course beautiful. No surprise then when she knocked it out of the park last week while announcing this year's Oscar nominations in a Monroe-esque number. Looking forward to seeing what else she wears during awards season.

In the battle of the "K's", only one can come out on top! They are both famous and pregnant, but whose style is more influential: Duchess Kate or Kim Kardashian? The answer may surprise you! Although, truthfully, it didn't surprise me. Designer Roland Mouret says Kim K has more "selling power", and that he'll get more business from something Kim wore, not Kate. Mouret attributes this to the fact that the Duchess isn't interested in drawing media attention, unlike Kim Kardashian who lets the media follow her life on a daily basis. OK, let's consider. Everyone loves the Duchess and she always looks impeccable, but, that's something difficult to achieve. Kim K, on the other hand, has the sexy factor going for her. For better or for worse, that's something most young women aspire to be. And, while both their clothes are expensive, it's easier to mimic a body hugging, high-heeled outfit, than a perfectly tailored suit. Although, all that being said, everything the Duchess wears immediately sells out immediately. So, which K do you think comes out on top? Kim or Kate?
You can file this one under "late to the party", but I now consider myself a convert to the top knot. This is nothing new for so many of you, but for me, I really went out on a limb trying it. See, hair...it's not really my thing. I'd love to have long luxurious, versatile locks, but my hair game is little limp. When the whole "sock bun" thing started gaining popularity, I was intrigued, but skeptical. I have boring hair and I'm not very crafty, so my socks will stay on my feet, thank you very much. Then those crazy bun donuts starting popping up in stores. They looked ridiculous! Until I saw my co-worker totally rocking this look. Her hair is great anyway, but she convinced me that donuts are not only for breakfast! I borrowed her bun-maker, and am proud to say that this weekend I rocked my first top knot. I really didn't think it would work with my fine hair, layered hair. While not perfect, I got tons of compliments, and my friends swear they could not see the bun maker lurking underneath. These things are under 5 bucks at beauty supply stores, and I can now assure you- well worth it!

The tools: bun maker! At most drug stores and beauty supply stores. They also come in different colors to match your hair. Have bobby pins and hair spray on hand as well.
My finished look! Not perfect- but still super cute!
Oh January, why you gotta be so mean? I have a post-holiday food hangover forcing me into bulky sweaters, and leggings for the foreseeable future. Not to mention winter has really only just begun! As I sit here writing this there is snow on the ground, and months of cold weather ahead. So what's a fabby girl like you supposed to do to pull herself out of the seasonal funk? Fake it! I'm already looking ahead to spring, and pretending it's much closer than it is. Let the floral patterns abound! Pair them with a cute sweater and you'll feel fresh as a daisy now! Another quick pick me up? Pantone announced emerald green as their color of the year for 2013. It seems appropriately on point with a new "Oz" coming out soon, and is an easy way to bring a pop of color and energetic feel to the dark colors that are crowding my closet. Your friends will be green with envy! And if all else fails, do what I always do: go sale surfing! End of season sales are running rampant this time of year! My friend could not stop raving about all her recent J Crew scores! Take advantage as stores start putting out their spring clothes. You won't be able to wear them for months, so stock up on those sweaters you were lusting after mere weeks ago. By the time you've done these 3 January pick-me-ups, the days will be longer, and you'll be thinking about your first beach day!
Talk about a spring fling! Pick up a pair of these toothpick jeans. The latest collaboration from J Crew and Liberty!
Take a trip to the Emerald City before it hits the big screen! Layer now with booties and a sweater... wear later with sandals and aviators. Sabine pleated maxi at Piperlime.
