Please excuse my 2007 reference to this culturally important song "Lip Gloss", but that's my jam. Lip gloss is kind of who I am. It started early with what I call my "gateway gloss": cherry chapstick. To this day the smell of cherry chapstick can bring me back to my childhood. Of course as the years went on I upgraded to Bonne Bell Lipsmackers, and eventually "Lipglass" by MAC. Those are all my old stand-bys. Nude looking lips were the thing for a while, but right now, I feel like color is having a moment...a moment I'd like to be a part of. Look at the newly crowned Miss USA, Olivia Culpo, - formerly Miss RI (go Lil' Rhody!). She is known for always having a colored lip. Not that she needs it- girl is gorgeous (and sweet- check out her interview earlier this year on The Rhode Show)! Anyway, Olivia has inspired me to find a color I love. I began my quest with Maybelline's new "Baby Lips" balm. I figured starting with something that looked more like a colored chapstick was a safe way to go. The so called "moisturize balm" has SPF 20 and its claims to provide "8-hr hydration for visibly renewed lips in 4 weeks." It comes in a variety of colors, I picked the pink colored tropical punch flavor. I loved the color! It reminded me of candy- in a good way! The smell is also fantastic, just like fruit punch. It goes on feeling light- but the color does pack a major punch, which is where the problem starts. Although it feels great on lips, on me, it ended up looking cakey...setting in to any lip cracks and crevices. It also settled into the corner of my mouth...leaving that dreaded ring...after wearing it for a while. I thought reapplying might help, but made it worse. I will say this- the color is great, but for me did not provide nearly enough moisture. It's a great price point, so if you'd like to try it, I recommend using is as a base coat under a gloss. For me, this one is a pass. The search continues....

As summer slowly creeps in (come on all ready!) I'm thinking about summer wardrobe staples. To me, an absolute must for the warm weather months is white pants. I want to be able to wear these pants into the ground, multiple times a week, for the short couple of months when white seems like the only viable choice. The problem is that white is certainly not a universally flattering color. So, it became quite the scavenger hunt for me, for years, to find the right pair. For a long time I had this one pair of white linen pants from H&M that were wide leg and flattering, but after time began to basically disintegrate because of how much I wore them. I can't bear to part with them, so they've been retired to beachwear ONLY- and even that is questionable. But last summer, things looked up in the white pant hunt! A co-worker of mine came in one day wearing the very pants I'd dreamed up in my head! White, fitted, flared and most importantly- thick! The issue with my linen pants was the underwear. We've all been through it- nude only, and even then, the cut makes a difference. I'll spare you the details but let's just say some advanced planning was involved. Back to the new dream pants... I immediately began playing 20 questions with my friend : where her pants were from, how long ago she got them, how much were they, what was the materiel, did her butt always look that good or was it just the pants (ok, that last one I just pondered silently in my head)? After getting the full 411 I rushed out, hunted the pants down, bought them on sale (meant to be!) and have been in love ever since. Since then, I've shared my love with friends, basically forcing them to buy the same pair. This season the pockets are a little different, and they now come in a couple different cuts and lengths, but they are the same loveable figure flattering pants that I will be wearing in heavy rotation for the next few months. Bonus: they are thick enough that you won't have to obsess about your undergarments, and dressy enough to wear to work or out for the evening. Oh and, they are on sale right now...GO!
